Losing the master keys to the MCG was a potential disaster for Melbourne Cricket Club assistant security Bryce Thomas.
But thanks to the Commonwealth Key and Property Register, the keys were returned within two hours.
“I had an armful of papers to load into my car and left the keys on the roof of the car as I drove off,” he said.
“About an hour and a half later I had a call from the Richmond police station saying they had been picked up in Brunton Ave.”
Mr Thomas said that if MCG master keys ended up in the wrong hands, it could have cost the club about $50,000 to replace locks.
“We have continued with the key register for about 50 years, and it is a small price to pay for the peace of mind,” he said.
The Registry a Private company, issues key tags that offer a $10 reward to anyone who finds the set
The tag asks the finder to return the keys to the nearest police station where the police will call a toll-free contact number and quote the members identification number.
“We have a proven and secure method of returning keys without revealing the owner’s identity” managing director Bryan Wheeler said.
